Fans hungry for a chance to see their team compete in next year’s World Cup have concluded that roly-poly Alexis Sanchez is to blame for the Chile’s poor run of form.

There’s yet another protest planned to take place in his homeland, with “thousands” of people slated to attend and urge Sanchez to dump his girlfriend, whom they blame for fattening up their beloved star.

The ludicrous concern seemingly snowballed out of control following comments by Sanchez’s former youth international team coach, Jose Sulantay, who said the Arsenal star looked “fatter than normal” during Chile’s disappointing World Cup qualifiers.

In a response to Sulantay’s remarks, Chilean fans have seemingly come to the conclusion that Sanchez’s girlfriend, Mayte Rodriguez, is ultimately the culinary culprit and have flocked to a Facebook event page to “commit” their attendance. Some would have to travel quite a distance to attend, as many of those who signed up aren’t actually Chilean.

Thus far, a whopping 55,000 have have signed up, with another 69,000 saying they’re “interested.”

If history is anything to go by, the turnout for the protest, which is to be held Oct. 5 before Chile’s World Cup qualifier against Ecuador, will fall well short of the lofty number.

Despite 14,000 agreeing to attend a protest in March aimed at urging Sanchez to depart Arsenal, fewer than 10 people actually showed up in the Chilean capital.

After Chile lost a pair of World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Bolivia, Sulantay, according Jack Rosser of the Evening Standard, said, “I saw him gone. I saw him out of physical shape, totally.

“He’s fatter than normal.”
